The Singapore Police Force has observed a recent trend of phishing scams impersonating well-known brands such as Singtel and IRUN. These scams aim to trick individuals into revealing personal or financial information through fake websites.
Here's how to recognise these scams:
- Look out for unusual website addresses. Scammers often use domains like
.shop or slight misspellings (e.g., servicesmetalinkion.shop, irunsg.shop) to trick you, rather than the brand's official .com.sg or .sg sites.
- Be cautious of unexpected requests for personal details, account updates, or payments received via SMS, email, or social media, especially if they come with a link to click.
To protect yourself, remember to ACT against scams:
- Add security features like two-factor authentication (2FA) for your online accounts and use strong, unique passwords.
- Check for scam signs. Always verify the authenticity of any message or website by visiting the official company's website directly or contacting their official customer service hotline (obtained from official sources, not from the suspicious message).
- Tell authorities, family, and friends about scams. Reporting helps protect others.
If you believe you have fallen victim to such a scam (e.g., clicked a link and provided personal information or made a payment):
- Immediately change your passwords for any affected accounts and any other accounts sharing the same password.
- Monitor your bank statements for any unauthorised transactions and report them to your bank immediately.
- Report the incident to the police.
