Advisory: Beware of Investment Scams Promising High Returns

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) Scam Public Education Office (SPEO) would like to alert the public to recent trends in investment scams. Scammers are creating fake investment opportunities online, often using convincing but fraudulent websites to trick victims into parting with their money.

How to Recognise These Scams:

  • Scammers create fake websites or apps, sometimes mimicking legitimate companies, to promote investment schemes that promise unbelievably high returns in a short period.
  • These fake investment opportunities often use generic or enticing domain names (e.g., "themostprofitableapp.us", "long-termprojects.us") and claim to represent well-known brands or projects.

I can ACT against scams:

Add security features:

  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for all your accounts. Consider setting transaction limits with your bank to minimise potential losses.
  • Install the ScamShield app to block scam calls and SMSes.

Check for scam signs:

  • Be suspicious of unsolicited investment offers, especially those promising guaranteed or high returns with little to no risk. Such offers are often too good to be true.
  • Always verify the legitimacy of investment platforms, companies, and individuals with official sources like the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) Investor Alert List. Check website URLs carefully for suspicious characters or domain names that do not match official sources.

Tell authorities, family and friends:

  • If you encounter such a scam, report it to the Police immediately. Your report can help prevent others from falling victim.
  • Inform your family and friends about these scams so they can stay vigilant too.

What to do if you are affected:

If you suspect you have fallen victim to an investment scam, please take the following steps immediately:

  • Stop all communications with the scammer and do not transfer any more money.
  • Inform your bank to halt any suspicious transactions and freeze your accounts.
  • Report the incident to the Police.
