The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has observed a trend of investment scams impersonating well-known brands such as Barrick Gold and Marriott Bonvoy. Scammers create fake websites and platforms to trick individuals into believing they are investing with legitimate companies, promising high returns.
How to recognise these scams:
- Unusual website addresses: Look out for investment opportunities promoted through website addresses that do not match the official brand's website (e.g.,
baobeiwa.bond, marrioot.net). Scammers often use slightly altered spellings or unusual domain extensions to deceive you.
- Suspicious investment offers: Be wary of investment offers, especially those promising high or guaranteed returns, that claim to be from well-known companies like Barrick Gold or Marriott Bonvoy. Legitimate companies do not typically offer direct, high-yield public investment schemes in this manner.
What to do if you are affected:
If you suspect you have fallen victim to such a scam:
- Report to the Police immediately and provide all relevant information.
- Contact your bank to halt any transactions made to the scammer's accounts.
- Change any passwords that might have been compromised, especially if you used the same password on the scam site.
Remember to practice "ACT" against scams:
- Adding security features like two-factor authentication.
- Checking for scam signs and verifying information with official sources.
- Telling authorities, family and friends about scams.
