The Singapore Police Force has observed a trend of investment scams impersonating legitimate brands, including "Lyft Bikes". Scammers create fake websites to lure victims into fraudulent investment schemes.
How to recognise this scam:
- Suspicious Website Addresses: Scammers use fake websites, such as
lyft098236.work, that closely mimic official brand sites. Always scrutinise the website's address; legitimate company websites typically use simple, well-known domains (e.g., lyft.com).
- Promises of Unrealistic Returns: Be highly suspicious of investment opportunities that promise guaranteed high returns with little to no risk, especially if they are unsolicited or require you to invest quickly.
What to do if you were affected:
If you suspect you have fallen victim to such a scam, have provided personal details, or made any payments, please take these steps immediately:
- Contact your bank or financial institution to halt any transactions and report the incident to them.
- Change passwords for all your online accounts if you suspect they might be compromised.
- Report the scam to the Police.
I can ACT against scams:
- Add security features: Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for all your online accounts, and use strong, unique passwords.
- Check for scam signs: Always verify the authenticity of websites, investment platforms, and unsolicited offers. Look out for suspicious URLs, grammatical errors, and promises that seem too good to be true. Cross-check information with official company websites or the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) Investor Alert List.
- Tell authorities, family and friends: Share information about scams with your loved ones to protect them. If you encounter a scam, report it to the authorities immediately.
