Advisory: Watch Out for Investment Scams Impersonating Brands

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) observes a recent trend of investment scams using fake websites that impersonate well-known brands and popular topics. Scammers are creating fraudulent schemes by pretending to represent trusted news outlets like CNA, luxury brands such as Rolex, and even trending cryptocurrency projects like "Airdrop Pepe" to lure victims.

Here's how to recognise these scams:

  • Scammers create fake websites impersonating trusted brands (e.g., CNA, Rolex) or trending topics (e.g., Airdrop Pepe) for fraudulent investment schemes.
  • These websites feature suspicious URLs that do not match the official brand (e.g., zylanto.site, 356739.org, pepemining.cc) and often promise unusually high returns in a short timeframe.

What to do to protect yourself and others: Remember the "I can ACT against scams" framework:

  • Add security features: Enable 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) for all your accounts where available. This adds an extra layer of protection against unauthorised access.
  • Check for scam signs: Always verify the legitimacy of any investment opportunity directly with the official company or financial institution through their verified channels. Do not click on suspicious links or trust unsolicited offers promising high returns. Always scrutinise the website URL for any inconsistencies; slight misspellings or unusual domains are major red flags.
  • Tell authorities, family and friends: Share information about scams with your loved ones to protect them. If you spot a scam, report it to help prevent others from falling victim.

What to do if you have fallen victim to an investment scam:

  • Immediately cease all communication with the scammer and do not transfer any more funds.
  • Contact your bank or credit card company immediately to report any unauthorised transactions and follow their advice.
  • Report the incident to the police at www.police.gov.sg/iwitness or call the Police Hotline at 1800-255-0000.
  • Change passwords for any online accounts that may have been compromised.
