Act Against Scams: Watch Out for Fake Online Shopping Sites

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) Scam Public Education Office (SPEO) observes a recent trend of fake e-commerce websites impersonating well-known brands like Adidas and Burberry. These sites are designed to trick shoppers with attractive deals, leading to financial loss or compromise of personal information.

Here's how you can ACT against such scams:

Checking for Scam Signs:

  • Suspicious Website Addresses: Always inspect the website's URL (web address). Scam sites often use slight misspellings, unusual domain extensions (like .shop or .net when it should be .com), or add extra words (e.g., shop-adidasoutlet.com instead of adidas.com).
  • Unbelievable Deals: Be cautious of websites offering popular or premium brand items at extremely low or heavily discounted prices that seem too good to be true. These are often lures to trick you into making a purchase on a fake site.

If you suspect you have fallen victim to such a scam:

  • Telling Authorities, Family and Friends:
    • Immediately contact your bank to report any unauthorised transactions and secure your accounts.
    • Change any passwords you might have used on the scam website, especially if you use the same password for other online accounts.
    • Report the scam to the police at www.police.gov.sg/iwitness or call 999.
    • Inform your family and friends about the scam to help them stay vigilant.

Remember, staying vigilant and verifying information is key to protecting yourself from scams. Always use official brand websites for your purchases and look out for the padlock symbol in the address bar indicating a secure connection.
